Run time: November 15, 2013 - November 15, 2014
RealBreed-RealColor is hosting a challenge to increase visibility for rare breeds, akin to The Race to 200 Kaaring for Nordanners and HARPG-BreedChallenge for fantasy breeds. Our focus, instead of racking up a ton of images for a breed point system, is visibility for the represented breeds and the artist by encouraging artistic growth. We feel that artists grow by challenging themselves and trying new things, which this point system will reward over a large quantity of nearly identical headshots. Participants will earn prizes once the challenge is concluded based not only on how they did compared to other participants but what personal milestones they reached.
Entries and information on joining are listed here.
Rules:
The horse does not have to be registered with RealBreed-RealColor .
The horse must be a real breed and a color that really exists in that breed.
The horse must be a rare breed. Check out this list for counts of various breeds. Breeds with a count of 50 or fewer will be considered rare. Breeds of fewer than 25 or 10 will get additional rarity bonuses.
Horse must start out with no show experience. It is preferred that they have only a reference image, but it is ok if they have a couple of breeding, foal, or leisure images. No images created prior to joining the challenge will count towards your points for the challenge.
All horses must have a reference or journal entry for you to keep track of their points. This may be their main reference if you wish.
Admins of this group are allowed to enter. Their points will be tallied by other admins, not themselves.
Points:
For each image you complete, you will record the points using the point system below on the reference or journal that you are using to record your horse's points. The staff will check over the points for each image that is submitted and verify that the ponts are counted correctly. You must have the staff award points for the "new" or "challenging" categories, you may not add points for these areas yourself.
Only images made by owner after the start of the challenge count. No leases, commissions, prizes, etc. Background/lineart may not be reused.

Estimated Populations of Various Breeds
This list is a compilation of counts of various breeds for the Real Breed Real Color Rare Breed Challenge. All numbers are accurate at the time this list is being compiled but are naturally prone to change.
Numbers are taken from various breed groups, with the highest count for each breed being listed below. As many people do not register their horses with breed groups, these numbers are likely to be lower than the actual number of horses of each breed in the game. If you know of a breed group with a higher count for a specific breed than is listed below feel free to submit it. Our aim here is not to compile a complete list of breeds, but to

Just out of curiosity... would it matter to point out that I don't agree with how the scores are done? :/ The scoring seems RP-focused and not art/effort-focused.
My halters/lead ropes "don't count" for tack even though it takes a lot of time to draw all those spirals and buckles and snaps and correct rings between the straps and I sometimes I add stitching as well. My pony is too small to ride and not used for driving, so she can't wear "real" tack. My recreational/reference pics only get 1 point even though I spent days on them, but breeding/training pics get 2 points? :/ And it's not fair that the rider/handler only gets 1pt for "at least two-thirds showing"; most people chop off the rider's head/face and just show the body/part that is riding the horse because it's easier/they don't want to try hard on something they're "not good at" so they skip it altogether, and I don't think I should have the same score as them when I do full-body full-detail people with faces/expressions/etc, faces are hard (especially drawing a specific person) and it's just not fair to have that ignored. We are, after all, drawing domesticated horses in shows and saddles and not wild horses and I think the people with them are important, a horse doesn't win anything without its rider/trainer.
I don't like all the extra points for breeding. I understand this is about "rare breeds" so I see the point in making new horses to spread them around and whatnot, but with this scoring no matter how hard I try on my pictures I'm at a disadvantage to people who just scribble out breedings and color linearts to make foal designs all day so they'll get offspring points. :c She isn't bred because she's a real character and has other purposes and because she ages in real time (her first foal would be born next year!), but she's not competing yet either, and without breeding/showing I'm not getting as many points as other people, no matter how much effort I put into my pictures. Non-competition non-breeding pets/companion animals get lower scores, and that is the whole purpose of this breed in the first place, they are not show horses in real life, they aren't used for anything in the real world except pony rides at zoos.
This event is for real breeds, so they should be using their real disciplines. Some people can't find shows for their disciplines; personally all I can ever find is show-jumping and dressage and all the pony classes are "kids classes" and I haven't found anyone yet who is hosting free-jumping; she can only enter halter classes aaannnnd halters don't count in your event! And what about warhorses and work horses, what are they supposed to do? People may be making up real rare breeds, but as long as they're still competing in popular events like dressage they're getting more points than another real rare breed that are rare on dA in the first place BECAUSE it doesn't do dressage/jumping/popular events.
I don't mean to complain or fuss or whine or anything, but I just wanted to mention this because I'm considering dropping out. It's just not fair to try so hard and get the same score as somebody who didn't draw all of their person or they get more points just because their tack is a bridle and mine is a halter when they're both the same thing except for the bit, or their picture is labeled "training" and mine is recreational, or they're doing the popular dressage/show jumping classes and mine can't enter because this breed doesn't do those things. v.v If it's judged on effort/art/etc, then things like breeding/training/competing should not have any effect on the score of the picture.
I don't care about actually winning (I have a late start and don't have time to really draw this horse a lot), I just want a fair score for what little I did accomplish. But there's only a few months left so I guess it would be a hassle to change the scoring now and have everybody update their points or have people be annoyed that they drew those particular images FOR the extra points and now it doesn't matter anymore. It's too late to change it now, but I thought this would be a useful critique for any future events.
I just can't bear this anymore, spending days on a picture and then when I jot down the points for it, this doesn't count and that doesn't count and it would have gotten an extra point if I'd made up some excuse in the description about how it's some vague form of training just so I could label it as a training picture, etc. Sorry about being all butthurt and whatnot, I didn't want to fuss so I didn't say anything for a long time, but after my third picture full of half-points I've decided to quit; two days on a halter that doesn't count is just depressing when she can't wear/has no reason to wear anything else. I thought maybe I should leave a comment because helpful honest feedback is more useful than leaving without explanation. Sorry again, I just want to help improve the scoring system for the next event. ;n; ♥
